Shubman Gill’s Defensive Skills Shine in England Series
Shubman Gill, a 24-year-old cricketer from India, credited his improved Test performance to working on his defensive batting during the England series earlier this year. Gill has an average of 35.52 after playing 25 Tests and scored 452 runs in the home series against England.
Gill said, “I worked on my defence a little bit more, especially against the spinners.” He is currently playing in the Duleep Trophy as the captain of the India A side. In India A’s first inning, he scored 25 runs from 43 balls at a strike rate of 58.14, hitting three fours at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Gill emphasized the importance of defense on turning tracks, saying, “If you’re playing on a turning track, you should be able to defend a lot more, then you play your scoring shots.” He made his Test debut against Australia in 2020 and has since played 25 long-format matches, scoring 1492 runs at a strike rate of 59.37. He made a crucial hundred in Vizag during the second Test against England, finishing the series with an average of 56.5.
India will play a two-match Test and three-game T20I series against Bangladesh at home from September 19 to October 12, followed by a three-match Test series against New Zealand from October 16 to November 5. These series will help India prepare for the Border Gavaskar Trophy later this year.
