Shubman Gill Aims to Improve T20I Performance as India’s Vice-Captain

Pallekele, Sri Lanka, July 26: Shubman Gill, the newly-appointed vice-captain of India’s white-ball cricket team, expressed his desire to improve his T20I performance ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2026. Gill, who will serve as the deputy to Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is and Rohit Sharma in ODIs, has scored 505 runs in 19 T20I games but is not satisfied with his average of 29.7 and strike rate of 139.5.

Despite achieving a century and three fifties, Gill’s other innings have often fallen short, with 12 scores below 20, including 10 single-digit scores. The 24-year-old hopes to transfer his successful ODI form, where he has scored 2271 runs in 44 matches at an average of 61.37, to the T20 format.

Gill stated, “At a personal level, I’m not satisfied with my performances in T20Is till the T20 World Cup [2024].” He aims to improve his performance in the upcoming cycle of 30-40 T20Is and believes that his new role as vice-captain will not hinder his on-field performance.

Gill is confident about working with Suryakumar Yadav, India’s new T20I captain, and looks forward to their partnership. He also expressed excitement about opening with Yashasvi Jaiswal, marking a new era following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from T20Is.

“We really enjoy batting with each other,” Gill said about his partnership with Jaiswal. “Our shots complement each other. A right-left combination helps. We have enjoyed our time together in T20I games. Our understanding and communication is pretty good.”
