Shiv Sena MP Naresh Maske Protests Against TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee in Mumbai

In Mumbai, Maharashtra, Shiv Sena MP Naresh Maske protested against TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee during a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. Maske claimed that Banerjee insulted witnesses who came to support the bill.

Incident Details

According to Maske, members of the Gulchand Foundation were present to support the Waqf bill. However, Banerjee allegedly shouted at them and told them to leave the meeting. Maske expressed his disapproval, stating, “What kind of behaviour is this? I won’t let this go in Maharashtra.”

Opposition Competition

Maske also mentioned that there is a competition among opposition parties to protest the most against the bill. He emphasized that no guest should be insulted during these protests. “To insult any guest is unacceptable, I won’t tolerate it in Maharashtra, neither will I tolerate it anywhere else,” he said.

Respect for Witnesses

Maske stressed the importance of respecting all witnesses, whether they support or oppose the bill. He said, “Whoever comes as a witness, there should be respect given to them.”

About the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024

The JPC is holding informal discussions with various stakeholders until October 1 to refine the proposed amendments to the Waqf Act. The Waqf Act, 1995, regulates over 600,000 registered waqf properties in India. The new bill aims to introduce digitisation, stricter audits, transparency, and legal mechanisms to reclaim illegally occupied properties.

Opposition from AIMIM Chief

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi criticized the bill, claiming it aims to dismantle the Waqf board. He said, “The Narendra Modi government is not bringing this bill to protect, develop or bring efficiency to the Waqf properties. This bill was presented to finish the Waqf board.”
