Shimla Scientists Help Apple Farmers Fight Leaf Diseases

Scientists from the Department of Plant Pathology at Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry in Nauni, Solan, Himachal Pradesh, have issued advice to apple farmers on managing leaf diseases. Teams from UHF Nauni, KVK Shimla, and KVK Kandaghat visited apple orchards in various regions including Chopal, Rohru, Kotkhai, and Jubbal.

Field Visits and Assessments

The primary goal was to assess the prevalence of Alternaria leaf spot and other leaf diseases. Visual assessments and disease severity estimations were carried out. Awareness camps were also organized to educate farmers on effective management strategies.

Findings

Alternaria and other fungal species were identified as the main causes of these diseases. The severity varied across different orchards, with Kotkhai showing 0-30% severity, Jubbal 0-20%, Rohru 0-20%, Chirgaon 0-15%, Theog 0-10%, and Chopal 0-4%. Farmers who followed the recommended pesticide sprays showed minimal disease severity.

Contributing Factors

Several factors were identified as contributing to the severity of leaf spot disease:

  • Adverse Climatic Conditions: Less rain and intermittent rainfall created a conducive environment for disease development.
  • Pest Infestations: High mite populations increased tree stress, worsening the disease.
  • Imbalances in Crop Management: Non-judicious use of chemical sprays led to phytotoxicity and weakened plant health.
  • Pre-existing Plant Stress: Conditions like root rot and canker made trees more susceptible to infections.

Recommendations

The university recommends the use of fungicides as per the spray schedule provided by the Directorate of Horticulture and the University. Continuous monitoring and need-based application of fungicides are essential for managing these diseases effectively.
