Shimla Police Continue Search for Missing People Amid Heavy Rains
The Shimla Police are actively conducting search and retrieval operations from Samej village to the Sunni area along the Satluj river. According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), 55 people have been missing since August 1, including 33 from Samej and Bagipul in Shimla and Kullu districts.
Heavy rains have caused significant disruptions, closing 128 roads and affecting 44 electricity and 67 water schemes. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for the next 24 hours, forecasting more heavy rain.
On August 9, the state government reported a loss of Rs. 900 crore to the Irrigation and Public Health (IPH), Public Works Department (PWD), and road infrastructure due to recent floods. The government has placed all districts on high alert for potential natural disasters until September.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed concern over the lack of immediate assistance from the Union government but assured that rescue operations would continue. He emphasized the emotional importance of finding the missing, stating, “The rescue and search operation will continue as we have sentiments that people want to see the body of their lost ones.”
CM Sukhu also criticized the previous government for not charging large hotels for water usage, a policy he has since changed to ensure funds are used to provide clean drinking water in rural areas.
