Abu Azmi had earlier posted on social media, emphasizing the importance of including the Samajwadi Party in candidate discussions within the Mahavikas Aghadi. He sought permission from Akhilesh Yadav to contest as many seats as possible in Maharashtra where the party is strong.
The Election Commission of India has scheduled the Maharashtra assembly elections for November 20, with results to be announced on November 23. The main competitors are the ruling Mahayuti Alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition.
