Shehzad Poonawalla Criticizes Kerala Assembly’s Resolution on Waqf Amendment Bill

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla

In New Delhi, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla responded to the Kerala assembly’s decision to pass a resolution for the withdrawal of the Waqf Amendment Bill. He criticized the Left and Congress parties, accusing them of lacking faith in the Indian Constitution. Poonawalla questioned their authority to pass resolutions on matters handled by the central government, especially those under discussion by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).

Poonawalla further accused the opposition of attempting to polarize Muslims with false information, citing past resolutions against the CAA law and the ‘one nation, one election’ initiative. He claimed these actions reveal the true intentions of the Congress and Left parties, which he believes oppose good governance.

Earlier, opposition MPs walked out of a JPC meeting on the Waqf Bill, protesting allegations made by Anwar Manippady, former Chairman of the Karnataka State Minorities Commission. The MPs argued that Manippady’s comments were politically motivated and irrelevant to the meeting’s agenda, which was to examine the Waqf Bill.

On the same day, the Kerala Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the central government to withdraw the controversial 2024 Waqf Amendment Bill.
