New Delhi, India, July 13: BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla reacted to Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut’s statement on the Emergency. Poonawalla said that if Congress and the INDI alliance get another chance, they will impose an emergency again. He mentioned that Congress and the INDI alliance support the Emergency and don’t condemn it. Bhupesh Baghel also praised Indira Gandhi for having the courage to impose the Emergency.

Earlier, Sanjay Raut defended the 1975 Emergency imposed by Congress, saying that even Atal Bihari Vajpayee would have done the same in a similar situation. He added that Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray and RSS supported the Emergency, which was imposed for national security. Raut stated that Vajpayee did not feel the Constitution was murdered at that time.

The Government of India announced that June 25 will be remembered annually as ‘Constitution Murder Day’ to commemorate the 1975 Emergency declared by Indira Gandhi. The Emergency period was marked by political turmoil, suppression of civil liberties, and censorship. It ended in 1977 after public outcry and electoral defeat for the ruling party, highlighting the resilience of democratic institutions in India.
