Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], September 27: BJP National Spokesperson Shazia Ilmi criticized National Conference Vice-President Omar Abdullah for spreading falsehoods about the transparency of the current elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Ilmi emphasized that the recent elections are being conducted transparently, unlike previous ones marked by alleged rigging.

Ilmi stated, “What does Omar Abdullah think, the time is gone when he used to say something in Srinagar, something in Jammu, this is the age of social media, your lies will not work… In Jammu and Kashmir, earlier there was rigging of elections…today votes are being cast with complete transparency.”

She highlighted that the first assembly elections in J-K, held after nearly ten years since the abrogation of Article 370, are a celebration of democracy. Ilmi added, “It is a celebration of democracy and people from all over the world are watching it, so Omar Abdullah and his tricks will not work…”

Omar Abdullah, on the other hand, expressed disappointment over the voter turnout, saying, “I was hoping for a little more turnout. Because there was no call for the boycott. There were no attacks. There was no attempt to suppress and threaten the voters.” He also attributed the situation partially to the central government’s portrayal of high turnout as a sign of normalcy.

The second phase of polling recorded a 57.03% turnout till 11:45 pm, with Budgam at 62.98%, Ganderbal at 62.51%, Poonch at 73.80%, Rajouri at 70.95%, Reasi at 74.70%, and Srinagar at 29.81%. Polling was conducted across six districts with 25.78 lakh electors eligible to vote for 239 candidates. The final phase of elections is scheduled for October 1, and the counting of votes will take place on October 8.
