Shatrughan Sinha Supports Mamata Banerjee Over RG Kar Medical College Incident
Trinamool Congress MP Shatrughan Sinha has reiterated his support for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following the tragic rape-murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College Hospital. Sinha emphasized that it is unfair to blame any Chief Minister for such crimes.
Speaking to the media in Patna, Sinha described the case as ‘very shocking and disgusting’ and expressed his support for the protesting doctors. He praised the ‘Aparajita Bill’ passed by the West Bengal Assembly, calling it ‘historic’ and urged the Centre to support and pass the bill into law.
Sinha criticized the politicization of the incident and stated that if such standards were applied, even Prime Minister Narendra Modi should resign over issues like the violence in Manipur and rape incidents in Hathras and Unnao.
Earlier, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose had criticized the state government over the incident, stating that the law is not being implemented properly. The ‘Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) 2024’ introduces the death penalty or life-long imprisonment for rape.
The incident has sparked nationwide protests demanding stricter laws for women’s safety. The victim’s family has accused the Kolkata Police of trying to offer them money while they were mourning their daughter’s death.
