Shashi Tharoor Talks About Dramatic Start to Parliament Session and Rahul Gandhi’s New Role

New Delhi, June 26: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor described the start of the current parliamentary session as dramatic. This came after Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla condemned the Emergency period in his speech. Tharoor mentioned that Opposition leaders hope the Speaker will conduct the House fairly and allow everyone’s voice to be heard.

Tharoor criticized the Speaker for raising a confrontational matter that had not been discussed in the House. He emphasized the Opposition’s stance, articulated by Rahul Gandhi, who stressed the importance of ensuring that the people’s voice is heard in the House.

Earlier, Om Birla condemned the Emergency period imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975, calling it a black chapter in India’s history. The House observed a two-minute silence in memory of those who lost their lives during that time.

Tharoor also commented on Rahul Gandhi’s election as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, calling it a good development. Rahul Gandhi, who won from both Raebareli and Wayanad constituencies, chose to keep Raebareli. Priyanka Gandhi will contest from Wayanad. If she wins, three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family will be in Parliament.

The Leader of the Opposition is a member of crucial committees and selection committees for appointing heads of statutory bodies like the Central Vigilance Commission and the Central Information Commission.
