Shashi Tharoor Criticizes President Droupadi Murmu’s Speech for Ignoring Current Issues

New Delhi [India], June 27: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed his dissatisfaction with President Droupadi Murmu’s address to a joint session of both Houses of Parliament. Tharoor criticized the speech for not mentioning current issues such as the NEET exam, unemployment, and the India-China border situation.

Tharoor found it illogical to bring up the topic of the Emergency, which occurred 49 years ago, instead of focusing on today’s problems. He said, “There was no logic of talking about Emergency in the address after 49 years. She should have spoken about today’s issues. We did not hear anything about the NEET exam or unemployment…The word Manipur did not come out from President Murmu or PM Modi. Issues like the India-China border should have been taken up in the address…”

On June 25, 1975, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed a 21-month state of emergency, a period considered one of the most controversial in India’s political history. President Murmu, in her speech, criticized the Emergency, calling it the darkest chapter of a direct attack on the Constitution. She assured that upcoming Parliament sessions would include major economic and social decisions and historical steps during the Union Budget.

President Murmu also highlighted the formation of a stable government with a complete majority for the third time and expressed confidence in the government’s ability to fulfill the aspirations of the people. She congratulated the newly elected members of the 18th Lok Sabha and encouraged them to serve the nation with dedication.
