Sharjeel Imam Seeks Early Bail Hearing After 28 Months in Custody

Sharjeel Imam, accused in the larger Conspiracy of Delhi Riots 2020 case, has requested an early hearing for his bail plea from the Delhi High Court. Imam’s bail plea has been pending for the last 28 months, and he has been in custody since January 28, 2020.

The plea, represented by Advocates Talib Mustafa and Ahmad Ibrahim, challenges the trial court’s dismissal of his bail application. The appeal against the order has been pending since April 29, 2022, and has been listed for hearing at least 62 times before different division benches due to frequent changes in the composition of benches.

The plea highlights that the Supreme Court has issued guidelines for expeditious decisions on bail applications, preferably within 2-4 weeks. However, Imam’s case has faced significant delays, affecting his education. Imam, a Ph.D. student at Jawaharlal Nehru University, was pursuing his final year of Ph.D. in Modern History at the time of his arrest.

The Delhi High Court has scheduled the next hearing for October 7, 2024.
