Marathi and Four Other Languages Recognized as Classical Languages

Sharad Pawar Expresses Gratitude

In Mumbai, Maharashtra, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar expressed his gratitude to the Central Government for including Marathi and four other languages in the ‘classical language’ category. This decision, announced on Thursday, is seen as a significant step for the promotion and development of Marathi.

Importance of the Decision

During a press conference, Pawar emphasized the importance of this recognition for Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali. He acknowledged the efforts of politicians, officials from the Marathi Sahitya Parishad, and other literary figures who have long advocated for this status.

Pawar noted that although the decision was delayed, its eventual implementation is crucial for the cultural and linguistic development of these languages. He thanked the central government for their support.

Background on Classical Language Status

The Union Cabinet’s decision follows the creation of the ‘classical languages’ category by the Government of India in 2004, starting with Tamil. The criteria for this status include high antiquity, a rich body of ancient literature, and an original literary tradition.
