Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule Lead Protest in Pune Over Badlapur Incident

On August 24, Sharad Pawar, the chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), along with leaders and workers from the Maha Vikas Aghadi party, staged a protest in Pune. They were protesting against the alleged sexual assault of two minor girls at a school in Badlapur.

The protesters, who wore black bands on their arms, braved the rain to demand justice. Sharad Pawar criticized the government, saying, “There is not a day in Maharashtra when there is no news of atrocities against women … The government should take this incident seriously. The government is saying that the opposition is doing politics, calling it politics shows how insensitive the government is.”

NCP MP Supriya Sule also participated in the protest and vowed to continue until the accused are arrested. She said, “Incidents of atrocities against women are increasing in the state…There is no fear of the police among people. I condemn the government. Some said that those who had gathered in Badlapur were from outside. I want to say that they were all Indians. I have never seen such an insensitive government … We will not stop protesting until the accused are arrested.”

Meanwhile, a special investigation team (SIT) has registered an FIR against the school authorities for not complying with the provisions of section 19 of the POCSO Act, which mandates reporting such incidents to the police. The alleged sexual assault of two fourth-grade girls at the school has sparked outrage. On August 17, police arrested a school attendant for allegedly abusing the girls.
