Sharad Pawar Advocates for Increasing Reservation Cap to 75% in India

Sharad Pawar, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party-Socialist Congress Party (NCP-SCP), addressed the issue of Maratha reservation, proposing a legal amendment to increase the reservation cap from 50% to 75%. During a press conference, Pawar acknowledged the widespread desire for reservations but stressed the importance of not compromising existing allocations for other communities.

Pawar explained that the current reservation limit is 50%, and any increase would require a change in the law. He suggested that raising the cap to 75% would allow for additional reservations for those currently not covered. He urged the central government to take action and introduce a proposal to amend the law, assuring that his party would fully support such a move.

“Everyone has this feeling that they should get reservation. There is nothing wrong with this. But while doing this, we should also keep in mind that the reservation that other people are getting should also be protected. It should not be harmed in any way,” Pawar stated.

He further added, “According to the current form of reservation, reservations above 50% cannot be given and if the reservation has to be taken above 50% then according to me, the law will have to be changed. What objection does anyone have to changing the law? Right now there is reservation up to 50%, it can be increased to 75%.”

Pawar concluded by affirming his party’s support for any government proposal to change the law, emphasizing the need for additional reservations to benefit those not currently receiving them.
