Shakib Al Hasan’s Unique Batting Technique in Chennai Test

During the Chennai Test, former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan was seen biting a black strap around his neck while batting. This was his way of keeping his head steady at the crease. Shakib’s mentor, Mohammad Salahuddin, and the BCB’s chief physician, Dr. Debashish Chowdhury, explained that Shakib created this method himself to prevent his head from tilting when playing the ball. Previously, he used a neck brace for the same purpose.

Shakib’s Eye Condition

Shakib’s head-positioning issues are due to an eye condition called Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSC), which causes fluid buildup under the retina and can distort vision. Ophthalmologists in Chennai, London, Dhaka, and Singapore diagnosed this condition last year. To ensure he sees the ball properly while maintaining good technique, Shakib has spent many hours perfecting his head position.

Expert Opinions

Dr. Chowdhury said, “He has come up with this strap. It is completely his idea. It has not come from us. He is working on a way to hold his head position while batting.” Shakib’s eye specialist in Chennai confirmed that his eye is improving. Bangladesh batting coach David Hemp added, “It is something that Shakib has been using during practice at various times over the last few months. He is very comfortable using the strap and feels that it assists his head position.”

Shakib’s Recent Performances

Shakib’s eye condition caused him to miss some matches earlier this year, but he returned to international cricket in the second Test against Sri Lanka and played in the T20Is against Zimbabwe and the USA, as well as the 2024 T20 World Cup. He was key in Bangladesh’s 2-0 Test series win against Pakistan and also played a County Championship match for Surrey against Somerset. However, during the Chennai Test, Shakib’s batting performance was not up to the mark, and he conceded over six runs an over in the 21 overs he bowled.

Future Prospects

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto defended Shakib’s place in the team, stating, “I look at how much hard work a player is putting into his game. Whether he is struggling enough to make a comeback. What is their intention towards their team. How much he is willing to give to the team.” Bangladesh selector Hannan Sarkar mentioned that Shakib’s finger issue only emerged after he began bowling in Chennai. They will observe him to see if he will be fit for the Kanpur match.
