Shakib Al Hasan to Play Final Test Match Against South Africa Amidst Political Turmoil in Bangladesh
Shakib Al Hasan, one of cricket’s most celebrated all-rounders, has announced that he will retire from Test cricket after Bangladesh’s series against South Africa in Mirpur. The series, scheduled for October, is still tentative as Cricket South Africa awaits security clearance.
This decision comes after significant political unrest in Bangladesh, including the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5. Shakib, who was playing in the Global T20 League in Canada at the time, has expressed concerns about his safety upon returning to Bangladesh.
Shakib stated, “I am available for the South Africa series, but since there’s a lot happening back home, naturally, not everything depends on me. I have discussed my plans for Test cricket with the BCB. Especially this series and the home series. I was thinking that it could be my last Test series.”
Shakib has already communicated his retirement plans to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and is hopeful that he can play his final Test match in Mirpur. The BCB is working to ensure his safety and smooth participation.
Shahriar Nafees, in charge of cricket operations at the BCB, assured that Shakib would not be “harassed unfairly” upon his return. Shakib, who became a member of parliament in January, is also named in a murder case in Dhaka. Bangladesh’s law adviser, Asif Nazrul, expressed hope that Shakib would not be arrested in connection with the case.
