Shakib Al Hasan Asks for Security to Play Final Test in Dhaka
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Faruque Ahmed has announced that the board cannot provide individual security for Shakib Al Hasan. Shakib, a prominent cricketer, expressed his desire to retire from Test cricket on his home ground in Dhaka against South Africa in October.
The series against South Africa is still uncertain as Cricket South Africa has not yet given security clearance. This uncertainty stems from recent unrest in Bangladesh, which led to the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and significant violence.
Shakib, who was named in a murder case and is a member of the Awami League-led government, requested security assurance from the BCB. However, Faruque Ahmed clarified that the BCB is not a security agency and cannot provide personal security. He stated that such security must come from the highest levels of the government.
Faruque also mentioned that he did not try to change Shakib’s mind about retiring from Test cricket, respecting his decision during this difficult phase of his life. Shahriar Nafees, in charge of cricket operations at BCB, assured that Shakib would not be unfairly harassed upon his return to Bangladesh.
