Shabana Hussain Seeks Women’s Reservation in Delhi University Student Elections

A plea has been filed in the Delhi High Court by Shabana Hussain, a student at Delhi University, seeking 50% reservation for women in the upcoming Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections. The petition aims to enhance gender equality in student governance.

The plea calls for the Central Government, UGC, and Delhi University to reserve 50% of seats for female students in both DUSU and college student union elections. This follows the recent enactment of 33% reservation for women in State Assembly and Parliament elections under the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.

Shabana Hussain, through Advocate Ashu Bhiduri, highlighted that despite 75 years of independence, women still face significant challenges due to societal discrimination. She emphasized that the Constitution, crafted by BR Ambedkar, guarantees equality and participation for women, stressing the importance of political representation for true empowerment.

The bench of Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela is scheduled to hear the matter on Wednesday. The nomination process for the DUSU elections is set to begin on September 17, 2024, with the election date scheduled for September 27, 2024.
