Severe Floods in Sherpur, Bangladesh Cause Devastation
In Sherpur, a northern district of Bangladesh, severe flooding has caused significant damage to property and lives. The floods have heavily impacted agriculture and fisheries, with losses amounting to 600 crore Bangladeshi Takas. Over 100 villages have been affected, and at least 12 people have died. Roads and infrastructure have suffered losses of nearly 113 crore Bangladeshi Takas.
Although floodwaters began receding from October 9, the affected communities continue to face challenges. Waterborne diseases like diarrhea and dysentery are on the rise, and there is a shortage of clean drinking water. The poor road conditions have made it difficult to deliver relief supplies, leaving many families without basic necessities.
Local residents have expressed frustration over the lack of government support, as no representatives have visited the affected areas. The flooding has also disrupted cultural events, with several Hindu families unable to celebrate Durga Pooja due to submerged temples.
Sherpur’s Deputy Commissioner, Torofdar Mahmudur Rahman, stated that relief supplies are being distributed and a list of victims has been sent to the Ministry of Relief and Rehabilitation. Rehabilitation efforts will begin once allocations are received.
The World Bank Group warns that Bangladesh is at risk of severe climate impacts, which could lead to a climate crisis if not addressed. Climate change is expected to affect the poor and vulnerable the most, with potential losses in agricultural GDP and increased internal migration.
