Severe Flooding in Madurai Due to Heavy Rainfall

Madurai, a city in Tamil Nadu, India, is experiencing severe flooding due to continuous heavy rainfall. The overflowing Pandalkodi canal has caused water to enter residential areas, creating significant hardship for the residents. The intense northeast monsoon rains have also affected Chennai, leading to widespread flooding last week.

Impact on Madurai

On Tuesday, Madurai faced uninterrupted rainfall for an hour, resulting in severe waterlogging in several areas, including Wards 24 and 27 of the Madurai Corporation. Over 6,000 residents are struggling with knee-deep floodwaters in low-lying areas, making navigation difficult.

Weather Forecast

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted very heavy rainfall for Tamil Nadu. A low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal is expected to develop into a cyclonic storm named ‘Dana’ by October 23, bringing more heavy rain to the region.

Recent Rainfall in Chennai

Chennai experienced heavy rain on October 19, disrupting daily life and services. On October 17, several areas recorded extremely heavy rainfall, with Kathivakkam and Manali receiving 23 cm and 21 cm, respectively.
