Sergey Lavrov Discusses BRICS and RIC Troika Ahead of Summit

PM Modi’s Visit to Russia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has reaffirmed the existence of the Russia-India-China (RIC) troika, despite it not meeting recently due to various circumstances. Lavrov’s comments came during an interview with a Moscow-based news outlet. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Russia from October 22-23 to attend the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, marking his second visit to Russia this year.

BRICS: A Shift in Global Economy

Lavrov highlighted that BRICS represents a shift in the global economy, with new centers of economic growth emerging in Eurasia and the Asia-Pacific region. The term BRICS originated from a study identifying the world’s fastest-growing economies. Lavrov noted that BRICS was formed from the RIC troika, with Brazil and South Africa joining later, making it a group of the fastest-growing economies.

BRICS’ Commitment and Future Prospects

Lavrov emphasized BRICS’ dedication to enhancing the collective potential of its member nations. He mentioned that experts from various fields collaborate to create strategies for mutual benefit. Lavrov also discussed future prospects, including a proposal for a new BRICS partner country category, which will be presented at the Kazan meeting.

BRICS’ Unique Approach

Lavrov praised BRICS for not being about conflict but about harnessing collective strengths. He highlighted that BRICS and other Global East associations focus on benefiting from competitive advantages like geographical location and shared history. The first BRIC summit was held in 2009, and the group was renamed BRICS after South Africa joined in 2010. Recently, BRICS admitted four new members: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
