Senior Lawyer Ujjwal Nikam to Lead Badlapur Sexual Assault Case
Senior lawyer Ujjwal Nikam has agreed to be the Special Public Prosecutor in the Badlapur sexual assault case. He expressed confidence that the chargesheet will be filed soon and the trial will be completed within the stipulated time.
Nikam received an oral communication from Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Faranvis, urging him to take the case due to its gravity. Although he has not yet received the official notification, he is optimistic about the progress.
Nikam, known for handling high-profile cases, acknowledged the public’s anger and the 10-hour Rail roko andolan protest. He praised the police for maintaining balance and pacifying the crowd. He emphasized that the rule of law is supreme and the accused will receive a fair trial.
The Maharashtra government has formed a Special Investigation Team to investigate the case. On Tuesday, police used lathi-charge to disperse protestors at Badlapur railway station, which led to train disruptions. The situation is now under control, with some arrests made and FIRs registered.
