Security Tightened in Sopore for Final Phase of Jammu and Kashmir Elections

Security has been increased in Sopore, a city in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, ahead of the final phase of assembly elections scheduled for October 1. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sopore, Divya D, stated that elaborate arrangements have been made at all polling booths as per the Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines.

SSP Divya D said, “The third phase of elections is set to take place in Sopore and the entire North Kashmir. We have set up a very strong security grid here. Campaigning was ongoing till 6 p.m. Now, we are observing the silence period in all assembly constituencies as mandated by the ECI.”

Earlier in the day, the Jammu and Kashmir police, along with other security forces, reviewed the security arrangements across the region for the final phase of polling on Tuesday. Maqsood Ul Zaman, Baramulla DIG, visited the constituency and expressed satisfaction with the security arrangements.

DIG Zaman said, “We have made the arrangements at Baramulla Constituency distribution and collection centre here as per the ECI guidelines. Whatever the guidelines are, we have adhered to them strictly. I came here to ensure that the arrangements are in accordance with the directions, and I am quite satisfied with what we have implemented.”

Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Kashmir Zone, VK Birdi, chaired a meeting on Sunday to review the law and order situation in Srinagar. The meeting took place at the Police Control Room Kashmir and was attended by senior officers from the police, security forces, and intelligence agencies.

Elections are being held in three phases in Jammu and Kashmir. The first phase of Assembly polls was held on September 18, while the second phase of polling was held on September 25. The counting of votes will take place on October 8. These are the first assembly elections in the Union Territory since the abrogation of Article 370.
