Security Tightened in Rajouri for Second Phase of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Polls
Rajouri (Jammu and Kashmir), September 24: As Jammu and Kashmir prepares for the second phase of assembly polls on September 25, security measures have been intensified in the Rajouri district. Security personnel have been deployed in various areas, and vehicles are being checked to ensure safety.
The second phase of the assembly polls will cover 26 assembly seats across six districts in Jammu and Kashmir. The seats include Kangan (ST), Ganderbal, Hazratbal, Khanyar, Habbakadal, Lal Chowk, Channapora, Zadibal, Eidgah, Central Shalteng, Budgam, Beerwah, Khansahib, Chrar-i-Sharief, Chadoora, Gulabgarh (ST), Reasi, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, Kalakote – Sunderbani, Nowshera, Rajouri (ST), Budhal (ST), Thannamandi (ST), Surankote (ST), Poonch Haveli, and Mendhar (ST).
This phase is crucial as it will determine the political future of several prominent leaders. Former Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah is contesting from both Budgam and Ganderbal seats. Other notable candidates include Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina from Nowshera and Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hamid Karra from Central-Shalteng.
Omar Abdullah held an election rally in Ganderbal district on Monday. Union Minister Jitendra Singh commented that the BJP-led government has already promised to restore the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir, accusing Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi of trying to take credit for this promise. Rahul Gandhi, addressing a rally in Poonch, emphasized the need for statehood to return before the elections but assured efforts to achieve it post-polls.
The first phase of voting, completed on September 18, saw a voter turnout of 61.13% across 24 constituencies in seven districts. The second and third phases of voting are scheduled for September 25 and October 1, respectively, with vote counting set for October 8, alongside Haryana.
