Secret Service Stops Assassination Attempt on Former President Trump in Florida
On September 17, the US Secret Service successfully prevented an assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump. The incident occurred near Trump’s golf course in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. Acting Director Ronald Rowe Jr praised the Secret Service’s quick response, calling it ‘textbook’ and ‘exemplary.’
Details of the Incident
During a press conference, Rowe explained that an agent fired immediately upon seeing the suspect’s weapon. The suspect, Ryan Routh, did not have a clear view of Trump and was unable to fire any shots. Routh was later charged with possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and having a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
Security Measures and Response
Rowe mentioned that Trump’s visit was not on the official schedule, so the security team had to quickly devise a plan. He emphasized the need for the Secret Service to move from a ‘reactive model’ to a ‘readiness model’ and mentioned ongoing talks with Congress for additional resources.
Rowe also noted that the Secret Service has successfully managed security for several large events since a previous assassination attempt on Trump in July. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw confirmed that the security level at Mar-a-Lago is at its highest, and Trump feels safe.
Investigation and Arrest
Routh was found with an AK-47-style rifle, a GoPro camera, and two backpacks. He was arrested on I-95 after fleeing the scene. The FBI is investigating Routh’s background, including his social media activity and past interviews. This was the second assassination attempt on Trump since July, when he was shot in the ear at a rally in Pennsylvania.
