Sealdah Court Extends Custody of Former RG Kar Medical College Principal and Police Officer

The Sealdah Court has approved the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) request to extend the police custody of former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and Tala Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abhijit Mondol by three days. This decision was made during a hearing on Tuesday.

The CBI lawyer explained that further investigation is needed regarding call recordings, DVR, CCTV, and other data related to the case. The lawyer emphasized the necessity of custodial interrogation, stating, “They are subjected to further investigation regarding call recording, DVR, CCTV, and other data. We want custodial interrogation. Things are in process. Custodial interrogation is required regarding data.” The lawyer also mentioned that Ghosh and Mondol were not cooperating during the interrogation.

Before the hearing, Sealdah Bar advocates requested the judge not to grant bail to Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondol.

Earlier today, the Supreme Court expressed its disturbance over the CBI’s report on the RG Kar Medical College incident. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, shared their concerns about the status report. The Supreme Court was hearing a suo motu petition on the rape and murder of a doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government removed the Kolkata Commissioner of Police, Vineet Goyal, and top officials at the Department of Health and Family Welfare. This action followed demands from protesting junior doctors after their meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday. Junior doctors continue to protest over the rape-murder case at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital near Swasthya Bhawan today.
