Saudi Arabia to Host First Olympic Esports Games in 2025
The Esports Federation of India (ESFI) has welcomed the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) decision to partner with Saudi Arabia’s National Olympic Committee to host the first Olympic Esports Games in 2025.
The IOC confirmed that a proposal will be presented at the upcoming IOC session on the eve of the Olympic Games Paris 2024. Details such as the venue, timings, titles, and qualification process will be revealed later.
Excitement from ESFI
Lokesh Suji, Director of ESFI and Vice President of the Asian Esports Federation, expressed his excitement: “This decision marks a significant milestone in the global recognition and growth of esports, providing a prestigious platform for athletes from around the world to showcase their skills on an unparalleled stage. Finally, esports at the Olympics–this is the news we have all been waiting for. We thank the leadership and the entire IOC for transforming our dreams into reality.”
Suji also highlighted the growth of esports, especially after its inclusion in the 2022 Asian Games, where India’s League of Legends team placed 5th. He added, “We are thrilled to see esports being embraced by the Olympic movement, reflecting the immense dedication, talent, and passion of the global gaming community. This development not only elevates the status of esports but also paves the way for greater opportunities and support for players and enthusiasts in India and beyond.”
Long-term Partnership
The partnership between the IOC and Saudi Arabia’s National Olympic Committee will last 12 years, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which aims for greater economic, social, and cultural diversification under the vision of Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman.
The ESFI congratulated the IOC and Saudi Arabia on their historic agreement and reiterated its commitment to developing esports as a mainstream competitive discipline in India.
