Satwiksairaj and Chirag Aim for Victory at Paris Olympics After Opponent’s Injury
Paris [France], July 29: The star Indian men’s doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are determined to continue their winning streak at the Paris Olympics. Their second Group C match against Germany’s Marvin Seidel and Mark Lamsfuss was cancelled due to Mark’s knee injury, making their third game a must-win.
According to the Badminton World Federation (BWF), Mark Lamsfuss has withdrawn from the Olympic Games Paris 2024 badminton competition due to a knee injury. The remaining Group C matches involving Lamsfuss and Seidel, including the one against Satwiksairaj and Chirag, will not be played. The results of all Group C matches are now considered deleted.
Satwiksairaj and Chirag began their Paris Olympics journey with a win over France’s Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar, defeating them 21-17, 21-14 in a 46-minute match. The Indian duo’s next opponents will be the Indonesian pair of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto on Tuesday. This match is crucial as it is their last game before the quarterfinals.
The Indonesian duo, formerly ranked number one and currently ranked seven, have won world championship bronze medals in 2019 and 2022 and were part of the 2020 Thomas Cup winning team. The Indian and Indonesian pairs have faced each other five times, with Satwiksairaj and Chirag winning three of those encounters, including their recent clash at the Korean Open 2023 final.
Satwiksairaj and Chirag, known as ‘Sat-Chi’, are strong contenders for a medal. This year, they have won two BWF Tour titles, the French Open and the Thailand Open, and finished as runners-up in the Malaysian Open and India Open. They were also part of the Indian team in the Thomas Cup 2024 but lost to China in the quarterfinals.
