New Agricultural Facility at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Approved

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has approved a significant project worth Rs. 284.19 crore to develop an agricultural processing and storage facility at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). This state-of-the-art facility will span 67,422 square meters and aims to improve logistics, reduce wastage, and extend the shelf life of agricultural products.

The new facility will help farmers and exporters by providing better prices for their goods, creating jobs, and promoting overall growth in the agricultural sector. It will cater to exports of items like non-basmati rice, maize, spices, onion, and wheat, and support exporters of meat and marine products.

Minister Sonowal stated, “Under the visionary leadership of PM Narendra Modi, the Ministry for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways is committed to creating robust infrastructure that enhances agricultural export capabilities and supports farmers and rural communities.”

The facility will include a frozen store of 1800 metric tonnes, a cold store of 5800 metric tonnes, and dry warehouses with a capacity of 12,000 metric tonnes. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of empowering farmers and fostering rural development.

Additionally, JNPA is the first major port in India to operate all berths on a PPP model and is among the top 100 global ports. The Ministry is also developing the Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra, which will be one of the largest ports in the world once completed.
