Sanjay Bangar Believes Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Can Play for Many More Years
Former Indian all-rounder and batting coach Sanjay Bangar has expressed confidence that star cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma can continue to serve the Indian cricket team for several more years. Speaking on The Rao Podcast, Bangar highlighted the importance of improved fitness and nutrition in extending players’ careers.
Bangar believes that Rohit Sharma, also known as the ‘Hitman,’ could potentially play until the age of 40, provided he maintains his fitness levels. He also mentioned that Virat Kohli might continue playing Test cricket for at least another five years.
“The players’ careers are going to get longer, and in that process, if it benefits the Indian team, nothing like it. Even with Virat, depends on his body. The last format that he would give up will be Test cricket. So, I am sure that you will see Virat playing Test cricket for another five years,” said Bangar.
Bangar also drew parallels with cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, who played until the age of 40, attributing their longevity to better fitness standards and professional support.
Virat and Rohit were instrumental in India’s recent ICC T20 World Cup victory, with Rohit being the second-highest run-scorer and Virat delivering a crucial knock in the final. Both players were last seen in action during India’s ODI series against Sri Lanka earlier this month.
Looking ahead, Bangar believes that with a World Cup or ICC tournament happening almost every year, both Rohit and Virat have plenty to look forward to, including the ICC World Test Championship 2025 and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027.
“In today’s time and age, the World Cup is happening every second year or every year you have an ICC tournament. I don’t think that would have been a factor. India winning the World Cup doesn’t mean that Rohit is going to walk away. Rohit has tasted success now, and India still wants to win the World Test Championship–there is something to look forward to,” he added.
