Sanath Jayasuriya Becomes Interim Head Coach of Sri Lanka Cricket Team

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced that former cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya will be the interim head coach of the men’s national team until September 2024. Jayasuriya, who is currently serving as the Cricket Consultant for SLC, will start his new role immediately.

Jayasuriya’s appointment follows the resignation of Chris Silverwood, who stepped down for personal reasons. Silverwood expressed his desire to spend more time with his family after a challenging period for the team, including a poor performance in the T20 World Cup.

Ashley De Silva, CEO of SLC, highlighted Jayasuriya’s extensive international experience as a key factor in his appointment. Jayasuriya is expected to guide the team effectively until a permanent head coach is found.

Jayasuriya is one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated cricketers, having scored 21,032 runs and taken 440 wickets in 586 international matches from 1989 to 2011. He is the third-highest run-scorer for Sri Lanka, behind Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.
