Samsung Workers’ Strike in Sriperumbudur
Protests Continue for Over a Month
In Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, Samsung workers associated with the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) have been on strike at the Sriperumbudur plant for 31 days. The protest saw a significant police presence, leading to the detention of several workers, including CITU State President A. Soundararajan, after a scuffle with the police.

Memorandum of Agreement
Samsung announced a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with employees to resolve the protest. The MoA includes a ‘Productivity Stabilisation Incentive’ of Rs 5,000 per month from October 2024 to March 2025.

The strike began on September 9, 2024, with 1,000 out of 1,800 workers demanding union recognition and wage increases. Despite the protest, production at the plant continued. The Sriperumbudur facility, opened in 2007, is one of Samsung’s two manufacturing plants in India, producing consumer electronics like televisions and washing machines.
