Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir), August 28: The Jammu and Kashmir Samajwadi Party President, Jia Lal Verma, announced that the party will participate in the upcoming J-K Assembly elections. The party plans to file nominations in the second or third phase of the elections.

Verma also stated that the Samajwadi Party will support the Congress and National Conference (NC) alliance in these elections. The assembly polls are scheduled to be held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1.

According to the seat-sharing agreement, the National Conference will contest 51 out of 90 seats, while Congress will contest 32 seats. The two parties will have a “friendly contest” on five seats and have left one seat each for CPI(M) and Panthers Party.

As of now, 279 candidates have filed their nomination papers across 24 Assembly Constituencies in seven districts of Jammu and Kashmir for the first phase of the elections. The last day to file nominations for the first phase was August 27.

In Anantnag district, 72 candidates have filed nominations, followed by 55 in Pulwama, 41 in Doda, 32 in Kishtwar, 28 in Shopian, 28 in Kulgam, and 23 in Ramban.

In the Jammu division, 13 candidates have filed nominations from 48-Inderwal AC, 11 from 49-Kishtwar AC, and 8 from 50-Padder-Nagseni AC in Kishtwar district. In Doda district, 16 candidates have filed nominations from 51-Bhadarwah AC, 16 from 52-Doda AC, and 9 from 53-Doda West AC. In Ramban district, 13 candidates have filed nominations from 54-Ramban AC, and 10 from 55-Banihal AC.

In the Kashmir division, 16 candidates have filed nominations from 32-Pampore AC, 13 from 33-Tral AC, 14 from 34-Pulwama AC, and 12 from 35-Rajpora AC in Pulwama district. In Shopian district, 15 candidates have filed nominations from 36-Zainapora AC, and 13 from 37-Shopian AC.

More than 23.27 lakh voters, including 5.66 lakh youths, are eligible to vote in the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Election on September 18, 2024. This includes 11.76 lakh male voters, 11.51 lakh female voters, and 60 Third Gender Electors.

Notably, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections saw a 25% increase in the number of candidates compared to the 2019 elections.
