Sakshi Malik Appeals to Prime Minister Modi for Wrestling’s Future
Indian wrestler Sakshi Malik has shared a video on her social media, expressing concerns about threats she has received. She has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to help protect the future of wrestling in India. Malik is worried about the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), which continues to operate despite a court order. She mentioned being threatened with serious corruption charges, adding to her distress.
Malik addressed the Prime Minister and Sports Minister, recalling the dominance of Brij Bhushan Singh after the Wrestling Federation elections last year. This situation forced her to step away from wrestling. Although the government suspended the federation, it resumed its activities. The court questioned how the federation could continue after the government’s ban, but the WFI did not comply with orders. When reprimanded again, the federation involved young athletes, whose careers depend on it.
Malik urged the Prime Minister to consider the future of these athletes. If he believes they are safe under the current federation, the suspension should be lifted. Otherwise, a permanent solution is needed. Her plea highlights ongoing issues within the WFI and the need for government intervention to ensure a fair environment for athletes.
In 2023, Sakshi Malik, along with wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, protested against Brij Bhushan, who was accused of sexually harassing female wrestlers.
