SAIL and BHP Join Forces for Greener Steel Production

The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), India’s largest government-owned steel producer, has partnered with global resources giant BHP to make steel production more environmentally friendly in India. This collaboration follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both companies to explore ways to reduce carbon emissions in steelmaking through the blast furnace (BF) route.

Decarbonisation Efforts

SAIL and BHP will work together on various projects at SAIL’s integrated steel plants, focusing on finding alternative materials like hydrogen and biochar to reduce emissions. SAIL Chairman Amarendu Prakash expressed excitement about the partnership, emphasizing the importance of aligning the steel sector with climate commitments.

Building a Sustainable Future

The initiative aims to enhance local research and development capabilities to support cleaner technologies. Rag Udd, Chief Commercial Officer at BHP, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating that collaboration is essential to tackle the challenges of decarbonising the steel industry.
