Safdarjung Hospital Performs First Successful Bone Marrow Transplant on 9-Year-Old

The Division of Paediatric Haematology Oncology at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi has achieved a significant milestone by performing its first successful paediatric bone marrow transplant. The procedure was carried out on a 9-year-old child diagnosed with high-risk relapsed Hodgkin Lymphoma, free of charge.

Dr. Ratan Gupta, Head of Paediatrics, informed that the transplant was led by Dr. Prashant Prabhakar and took place on August 2nd following conditioning chemotherapy. The patient was successfully discharged on September 7 and will remain under close observation for the next two months.

This achievement is a result of the establishment of a dedicated Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) unit in 2021, spearheaded by Director General Dr. Atul Goel. Dr. Vandana Talwar, Medical Superintendent, stated that this success opens doors for many children who need BMT but cannot afford it elsewhere.

Last year, the first successful bone marrow transplant in the BMT Unit of Safdarjung Hospital was performed on a 45-year-old woman. Dr. Vandana Talwar announced that this milestone aligns with the vision of the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Mansukh Mandviya, and the esteemed Director General of Health Services, Dr. Atul Goel, to provide bone marrow transplants in central government hospitals at minimal cost.
