On October 12, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), took part in a significant environmental campaign at the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary in Dubai, UAE. The initiative aimed to plant 4,500 mangrove trees and was organized by DEWA in collaboration with the Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG).

Participants and Goals

The campaign saw participation from DEWA’s Executive Vice Presidents, Vice Presidents, senior officials, employees, and students from DEWA Academy. This effort aligns with the UAE’s national initiative to plant 100 million mangrove trees by 2030, supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, which include clean water, climate action, and life below water and on land.

Environmental Impact and Achievements

In 2023, DEWA successfully planted over 5,500 mangrove trees at the sanctuary, involving 1,000 DEWA employees and their families, along with students. Participants contributed 2,080 volunteering hours, and the campaign achieved a 92.9% happiness rate among participants. Additionally, DEWA removed 3,100 kilograms of waste and collected eight tonnes of algae and seaweed for scientific research.

Al Tayer emphasized the importance of biodiversity and the protection of natural habitats, highlighting the role of mangrove forests in combating climate change and protecting coastal ecosystems. He praised the community’s involvement and the spirit of volunteering shown by participants.
