Strengthening India-Sri Lanka Relations
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited Sri Lanka on October 4, emphasizing India’s commitment to strengthening ties with its neighbor. During his visit, he met with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, among others.
Development and Economic Support
Jaishankar assured continued development assistance from India, focusing on projects prioritized by Sri Lanka. He announced a grant of USD 61.5 million to modernize the Kankesanthurai port and offered to convert USD 20 million in completed project payments into grants. India will also gift 22 diesel locomotives to Sri Lanka.
Energy and Infrastructure Initiatives
Discussions included energy production, fuel supply, solar electrification, and digital infrastructure. The Sri Lankan President highlighted the potential of exporting renewable energy to India and the importance of Indian tourists to the economy.
Support for Economic Stability
Jaishankar reiterated India’s support for Sri Lanka’s economic recovery, including debt restructuring efforts and facilitating Indian investments. He confirmed India’s backing in the Official Creditors’ Committee for Sri Lanka’s agreement with bondholders.
Security and Defense Cooperation
The meetings underscored the intertwined security interests of both nations, promoting trust and transparency. Jaishankar also addressed the issue of detained Indian fishermen, advocating for their release.
Ethnic Reconciliation and Future Visits
Jaishankar expressed support for the aspirations of all Sri Lankan communities, emphasizing the importance of the 13th Amendment and Provincial Council elections. An invitation was extended to President Dissanayake to visit India.
