S Jaishankar Responds to MK Stalin’s Plea for Fishermen’s Release

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has written back to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, addressing his concerns about Indian fishermen detained by the Sri Lankan Navy. Jaishankar assured that the Indian High Commission in Colombo and the Consulate in Jaffna are working diligently for their release.

As of June 26, 34 Indian fishermen are under judicial remand in Sri Lanka, and six others are serving sentences. Jaishankar emphasized that the Indian government prioritizes the welfare and security of its fishermen.

Stalin had highlighted the frequent arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen, noting that 203 fishermen and 27 boats were apprehended in 2024 alone. He requested Jaishankar’s immediate intervention to release 47 fishermen and 166 boats currently in Sri Lankan custody.

Stalin stressed that these incidents disrupt the livelihood of the fishermen and create fear within their community. Families of the detained fishermen have urged both central and state governments to take swift action.
