S Jaishankar Meets UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Other Leaders at UNGA79
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York. They discussed the Pact for the Future, reforming multilateralism, artificial intelligence, climate action, and concerns in West Asia and Ukraine.
Jaishankar shared his thoughts on social media, stating, “Always a pleasure to speak with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Discussed the Pact for the Future, reforming multilateralism, AI, climate action, West Asia and Ukraine.”
The UN General Assembly recently adopted the Summit of the Future pact, which covers themes like peace and security, sustainable development, climate change, digital cooperation, human rights, gender, youth, and global governance transformation.

On the sidelines of UNGA79, Jaishankar met with several foreign ministers to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation:

- FM Badr Abdelatty of Egypt: Talked about the progress in bilateral ties and regional developments.
- FM Nasser Bourita of Morocco: Focused on bilateral cooperation and reformed multilateralism.
- DPM and FM Ervin Ibrahimovic of Montenegro: Discussed advancing cooperation in business, health, and tourism.
- FM Maria Stenergard of Sweden: Talked about sustainable development, investments, and skilled workers’ mobility.
- FM Luminita Odobescu of Romania: Discussed tourism, defense, and mobility, and exchanged views on Ukraine.
- FM Maksim Ryzhenkov of Belarus: Talked about health, education, technology, and economic linkages.
- FM Albert Shingiro of Burundi: Had a quick catchup.
BRICS Meeting
Jaishankar highlighted the significance of BRICS for global diversity and the need to reform multilateralism. He also stressed achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets, addressing debt, promoting fair trade, and overcoming poverty. He thanked FM Mauro Vieira for convening and chairing the meeting.
