Astana, Kazakhstan – External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the importance of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in combating terrorism, separatism, and extremism during an interview in Astana. He praised Kazakhstan’s efforts during their Chairmanship to update the program against these threats, which was adopted at the Astana Summit.

Key Points from Jaishankar’s Interview

Jaishankar highlighted that terrorism is a major global challenge and stressed the need for urgent action. He noted that the SCO’s priority is to fight against the three evils: Terrorism, Separatism, and Extremism. He also mentioned that during India’s presidency of the SCO last year, joint statements were adopted to counter radicalization leading to these threats.

Implementation of Anti-Terrorism Measures

Jaishankar emphasized the importance of implementing the updated program to combat terrorism, separatism, and extremism. He called for a strong commitment from all SCO member states to eliminate all forms of terrorism, including cross-border terrorism.

India’s Role and Priorities

During the SCO Summit under Kazakhstan’s Presidency, Jaishankar represented India and delivered remarks on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He highlighted India’s priorities for the Chairmanship, which focused on the theme ‘Towards a SECURE SCO’ – an acronym for Security, Economic cooperation, Connectivity, Unity, Respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and Environment.

Combating Drug Trafficking

Jaishankar also addressed the issue of drug trafficking, noting its close relation to terrorism and regional stability. He welcomed the consensus on establishing an Anti-Drug Centre in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, which, along with the proposed Universal Centre, will be effective in combating drug trafficking.

Future Steps

Jaishankar expressed hope that the proposed Universal Centre within the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) in Tashkent will become a leading anti-terrorist structure in the region. He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to combat terrorism, including identifying and punishing facilitators, financiers, and sponsors of terrorism.
