External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke at the 23rd Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Head of Government meeting in Islamabad. He emphasized that solutions to global challenges are found in the SCO’s Charter, advocating for cooperation based on mutual respect and sovereign equality.

Global Disruptions and SCO’s Response

Jaishankar highlighted the timing of the meeting amidst global disruptions like climate events and conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war and the Middle East crisis. He urged SCO members to reflect on the Charter’s goals, which include strengthening trust, friendship, and regional cooperation.

Commitment to the SCO Charter

He stressed the importance of reaffirming commitment to the Charter to achieve cooperation and integration benefits. Jaishankar called for an agenda based on mutual interests and adherence to the Charter’s principles.

India’s Global Initiatives

Jaishankar also discussed India’s commitment to global initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. He highlighted India’s efforts in promoting renewable energy, sustainable lifestyles, and digital public infrastructure.

Reforming the United Nations

Jaishankar advocated for comprehensive reform of the United Nations Security Council to make it more representative and effective. He emphasized the need for the SCO to lead in advocating such changes.

Engagement with Pakistan

During his visit, Jaishankar planted a sapling at the High Commission of India in Islamabad and attended a dinner hosted by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Sharif. The meeting was chaired by Pakistan’s Prime Minister as the current chair of the SCO Council.
