S Jaishankar Discusses India-US Relations and Global Diplomacy in Washington

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently spoke at the Carnegie Endowment office in Washington, DC, about the importance of mutual respect and boundaries in international diplomacy, especially between democracies. During a discussion with Carnegie’s President Mariano-Florentino Cuellar, Jaishankar addressed comments by US leaders on India’s democracy, stating, “You have every right to comment. But I have every right to comment on your comment.”

Jaishankar highlighted the globalized nature of politics, noting that internal issues in one country can have international implications. He emphasized that foreign interference is a critical concern, stating, “Foreign interference is foreign interference, irrespective of who does it and where it is done.”

During his visit, Jaishankar also discussed global issues such as the war in Ukraine, the idea of an “Asian NATO,” and the future of Taiwan. He answered questions about India’s neighborhood policy and the government’s relationship with the Indian diaspora.

Jaishankar’s visit to Washington followed the recent Quad Summit and high-level meetings at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where the discussion took place, is a global think tank focused on international peace, security, and governance.
