Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Supports China on Taiwan Issue
On October 4, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated Russia’s support for China regarding the Taiwan issue. Lavrov emphasized Russia’s consistent backing of China’s territorial integrity during an interview with the Russian government newspaper, Rossiiskaya Gazeta. He criticized the United States for escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait by strengthening ties with Taiwan, which he claims violates the ‘One China’ principle.
Lavrov highlighted the shared perspective of Russia and China on the risks posed by Western influence in the Indo-Pacific region. He accused the US and NATO of undermining security mechanisms in Europe and called for a new security framework for Eurasia. Lavrov also praised China’s balanced stance on the Ukraine War, noting that both countries aim to address the conflict’s root causes, which they attribute to NATO’s eastward expansion.
Additionally, Lavrov mentioned that China and Brazil are working on a peace proposal involving a conference with Russian and Ukrainian leaders. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected this idea, focusing instead on his plan to restore Ukraine’s 1991 borders.
The ‘One China principle’ is a policy held by the People’s Republic of China, asserting that there is only one sovereign state under the name China, with the PRC as the sole legitimate government. Meanwhile, Taiwan continues to report frequent air and sea incursions by Chinese military forces, with 407 aircraft and 206 ships tracked this month alone.
