Ruckus in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Over Article 370

In Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, a commotion erupted in the assembly for the third consecutive day. The disturbance began when a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) MLA from Kupwara displayed a banner supporting the restoration of Article 370. This led to a clash between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs and other members, including Sheikh Khursheed of the Awami Ittehad Party. The Speaker, Abdul Rahim Rather, ordered the removal of BJP MLAs and Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh from the House.

During the session, BJP MLAs raised slogans against the PDP and shouted ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai.’ Sunil Sharma, the Leader of the Opposition, criticized the Speaker, accusing him of acting like a National Conference representative and suppressing opposition voices. Sharma declared the day as the “darkest day in democracy” and stated that the assembly is not above the Parliament and Supreme Court, thus opposing any debate on Article 370.

After being removed from the House, Sharma announced plans to run a parallel assembly in protest. He claimed the Speaker’s actions were unlawful and demanded the withdrawal of the resolution to restore Article 370, which he deemed historical and non-debatable.

Earlier, a resolution to restore Article 370 was introduced by PDP leader Waheed Para, but Chief Minister Omar Abdullah dismissed it as insignificant. The National Conference had promised the restoration of Article 370 in its election manifesto. The assembly session, which began on November 4, concluded today.
