Rohit Sharma’s Test Ranking Drops to Lowest Since 2018
Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has experienced a significant drop in his ICC Test batting ranking, reaching his lowest position since December 2018. In the latest ICC update, Sharma fell nine places from 15th to 24th. This marks his lowest ranking in nearly six years. Previously, he had dropped to 44th after a match against Australia in December 2018. His form improved with twin centuries against South Africa in October 2019, boosting him to 17th. From February 2021 to February 2023, Sharma consistently stayed in the top ten, achieving a career-high rating of 813 and ranking fifth globally in September 2021. Currently, his rating has decreased to 649, the lowest since February 2021. Recent poor performances against Bangladesh and New Zealand contributed to this decline, including low scores in the Bengaluru and Pune Tests, leading to India’s first home Test series defeat in 12 years.
Other Indian players also saw ranking declines. Virat Kohli dropped six places to 14th, and Rishabh Pant fell five spots to 11th. Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah lost his No. 1 bowler ranking to South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada. Pakistan spinner Nauman Ali entered the top ten among bowlers. On a positive note, Pakistan’s Saud Shakeel rose 20 places to 7th in batting rankings, and Rachin Ravindra moved into 10th. India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal gained one spot, moving into third place, displacing Harry Brook.
