Bridgetown [Barbados], July 1: Rohit Sharma thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for praising Team India after they won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Rohit said, ‘very proud to be able to bring the cup home.’ India defeated South Africa by seven runs in the final match held in Barbados on Saturday.

Following the victory, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20I cricket, leaving the team without a captain in the 20-over format. Rohit expressed his gratitude on X, saying, ‘Thank you so much @narendramodi sir for your kind words. The team and I are very proud to be able to bring the cup home and are truly touched by how much happiness it has brought everyone back home.’

Prime Minister Modi congratulated the team and praised Rohit Sharma’s leadership and impressive T20 career. Modi wrote on X, ‘Dear @ImRo45, You are excellence personified. Your aggressive mindset, batting and captaincy has given a new dimension to the Indian team. Your T20 career will be remembered fondly. Delighted to have spoken to you earlier today.’

Rohit Sharma retires as the highest scorer in T20 internationals with 4231 runs in 159 games and holds the record for most hundreds (five) in the format. He has won two T20 World Cups: the first in 2007 as a player and the current one in 2024 as captain.

Match Summary

India won the toss and chose to bat first. Despite an early setback at 34/3, a partnership between Virat Kohli (76) and Axar Patel (47) helped India recover. Contributions from Shivam Dube (27) took India to 176/7 in 20 overs. South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje were the top bowlers.

In their chase of 177 runs, South Africa was reduced to 12/2. Quinton de Kock (39) and Tristan Stubbs (31) brought SA back into the game, followed by a half-century from Heinrich Klaasen (52). However, Indian bowlers Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya made a strong comeback, restricting SA to 169/8. Virat Kohli was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his performance.

This victory marks India’s first ICC title since the Champions Trophy in 2013.
