Rohit Sharma Talks About His Cricket Journey and Retirement from T20Is

New Delhi, India – Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma recently shared his thoughts on his long career and his decision to retire from T20 International (T20I) cricket. Speaking on Jitendra Chouksey’s YouTube channel, Rohit reflected on his journey and the importance of fitness in his career.

Close to 500 Matches

Rohit mentioned that he is nearing the milestone of playing 500 international matches for India, a feat achieved by very few cricketers globally. He emphasized the role of fitness and mental preparation in maintaining such longevity in the sport.

“To play for 17 years and to play nearly 500 games for India internationally is something not a lot of cricketers have done. To have that longevity, there has to be something about your routine, how you manage your fitness, your mind, and how you train yourself,” Rohit said.

Retirement from T20Is

Rohit revealed that he retired from T20Is after winning the ICC T20 World Cup in June. He felt it was the right time to step aside and allow younger players to take over.

“The only reason I retired from T20Is is because I’ve had my time. I enjoyed playing the format. Having won the World Cup, this was the best time for me to move on. There are a lot of good players who can do well for India,” Rohit explained.

Impressive T20I Career

Rohit retired as a double T20 World Cup champion, having won the title in 2007 and again recently. In his T20I career, he played 151 matches, scoring 4,231 runs with an average of 32.05 and a strike rate of over 140. He also holds the record for the most runs in T20I cricket.

Early Days and Challenges

Rohit started playing cricket at the age of nine with friends in his society in Mumbai. He spoke about the challenges he faced, including long hours of travel and balancing studies with cricket.

“The sport has so many demands, be it traveling, learning skills, fitness, and training. In Mumbai, if you want to be a cricketer, you have to travel a lot. It did take a toll on me physically and mentally, but I enjoyed it, and it made me tough,” Rohit said.

Current Series

Rohit is currently playing in a two-match Test series against Bangladesh. India is leading the series 1-0, and the second Test is taking place at Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium.
